Overview

To address any health concern well, it helps to understand its root cause. In this article, we look at common causes of facial swelling, simple home care, traditional homeopathic remedies some people use, and when to get medical help.

Emergency: Swelling of the throat, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing or swallowing, can be a sign of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Call 911 right away. If you have a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, use it as directed. Do not rely on home or homeopathic remedies.

Common Causes of Facial Swelling

  • Sunburn
  • Allergic reactions to foods, medicines or insect bites
  • Injury or bruising, including after surgery or dental work
  • Infections, such as a tooth abscess or a skin infection
  • Fluid retention, which can be linked to other medical conditions

See a doctor if swelling is sudden, severe or painful, comes with fever, spreading redness or changes in vision, or does not improve within a few days.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Sunburn

Apple cider vinegar is a gentle home tip some people use for mild sunburn on the face. There is little research on it, so think of it as a comfort measure only:

  • Apple cider vinegar may provide some relief from the sting of a mild sunburn and the facial swelling that comes with it.
  • A simple mixture of apple cider vinegar and plenty of water can be applied gently to the sunburned area with a soft cloth. Keep it away from your eyes, never use it undiluted, and stop if it stings more or irritates your skin.
  • Another method is to mix it with witch hazel and water, which some people also find soothing.
  • Cool compresses, cool showers, aloe gel and drinking extra water are other simple ways to stay comfortable.
  • If the sunburn and swelling persist or worsen, or you have blisters over a large area, fever, chills or dizziness, see a doctor.

Traditional Homeopathic Remedies

Please note: The uses described below are based only on traditional homeopathic theories, which are not accepted by most modern medical experts. There is no scientific evidence that these remedies work for facial swelling. They have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness and are not a substitute for medical care.

Arnica Montana

Arnica montana is a widely used homeopathic remedy. In traditional homeopathic use, it is taken for bruising, soreness and swelling after tissue injuries, including after plastic surgery or other surgical procedures.

Arnica is available as an oral remedy and as a cream or ointment for topical application. Never use arnica on broken skin or an open wound. Herbal arnica products that are not homeopathic can be toxic if swallowed. If you are recovering from surgery or an injury, talk with your surgeon or physician before using arnica or any other remedy, and tell them about any swelling that gets worse.

Apis Mellifica

Apis mellifica is a homeopathic remedy made from the honeybee. According to the book "Homeopathic Medicine at Home," it is traditionally used for mild swelling that is bright red, warm, stinging or itchy, such as from an insect bite. People who are allergic to bee stings should ask a doctor before using it.

Apis mellifica must never be used for swelling of the throat, mouth, lips or tongue, or for any serious allergic reaction. Those symptoms can signal anaphylaxis and need emergency care: call 911.

If you would like to use a homeopathic remedy alongside conventional care, do so only under the supervision of your physician, and tell them about every remedy and supplement you take.
